Course goal: This course aims to provide the knowledge and techniques for carrying out pressure testing and leak testing in the workplace.
Learning Objectives:
Section 1:
LO1 Define what is meant by a leak test
LO2 Define what is meant by a pressure test
LO3 Outline the role of the leak tester and the general requirements for leak/pressure testing
LO4 Identify examples of systems that require to be pressure or leak tested
LO5 Give an overview of the dangers of nitrogen and working in oxygen deficient atmospheres
Section 2:
LO6 Explain proof testing and strength testing of pressure vessels and pipework
LO7 Identify examples of the various methods of leak testing
LO8 Explain the differences and risks using water as a test medium compared to using pressurised inert gas

LO9 Give an overview of flange tags and disturbed flange management
LO10 Outline how to plan a leak test
LO11 Explain how to use P&IDs for planning purposes
LO12 Explain how to use valve line-up checklists
LO13 Explain the use of task risk assessments prior to leak testing
Section 4:
LO14 Identify the equipment required for leak testing
LO15 Explain the use of Helium as a trace gas
LO16 Describe how to use the HeliTest unit
LO17 Describe the operation of an intensifier pump
Section 5:
LO18 Describe line specifications and their use in identifying design pressures
LO19 Identify PSV ratings
LO20 Identify examples of test documentation
Section 6:
LO21 Explain the role of hydraulic accumulators
