Electric Propulsion Fundamentals

Course information

Target group:

Awareness

Description:

Electrical propulsion is achieved by propulsion shafts and propellers, or by using azimuth thrusters. These electrically driven propellers can be mounted on a steerable pod and can rotate and tilt in any direction, making the ship highly manoeuvrable. Furthermore, a high voltage power generation system enables efficient utilisation of power, distributed across both propulsion and ship services.

During this course you will gain an understanding of the applications and technical aspects of electrical propulsion systems, focusing on the advantages and layout of plants. You will explore the power supply network of propulsion systems, the range of motor and converter applications, as well as rectification and inversion, harmonics and projections associated with electric propulsion applications.
